Traditionally, heaters have been run on LPG but as this fuel source is being phased out it is harder to find out on the road. So switching to a diesel unit makes sense as all service stations offer diesel fuel. 

These units are very safe and have an auto shutdown sensor if the temperature gets too high and deliver a clean dry heat.

As the combustion chamber is completely sealed it is safe to use when you are asleep as the carbon monoxide fumes are vented to the outside. If the temperature is set to low, you should get about 10 hours of heating per 1 litre of fuel. As with all things mechanical, make sure you have the unit installed by a professional and have it service and inspected regularly.
